Taking a Two-Fold Approach in Finding an Efficient Way to Ship Air
Since shipping air can be costly, especially to the environment, we saw the need to improve the efficiency of our supply chain when distributing Duck® brand Bubble Wrap® brand cushioning. So, we challenged ourselves to find a sustainable approach where we could ship more high-quality products to our customers while cutting back on transit to ultimately minimize our emissions.
A Two-Fold Approach
First, we made strategic product improvements to allow for more efficient transport, without sacrificing the quality or performance of our portfolio. This allowed us to load more Duck® brand Bubble Wrap® brand cushioning on trucks, leading to fewer trucks on the road.
“After taking a look at how we could streamline the shipping process of our bubble cushioning, we also identified a way to use less plastic material in our bubble cushioning,” says Natalie Guillaume, Senior Product Manager. “This allowed us to not only fit more rolls into a trailer but also improve the product’s sustainability.”
Then we focused efforts on improving the efficiency of our supply chains. Our improved approach allows us to cut back on transit and remove excess trucks from the road while also streamlining our shipping and handling approach. This maximizes trailer utilization to let us ship more products on fewer trucks, which helps us emit fewer emissions.
Going the Extra Mile
Implementing this strategic two-fold approach has allowed us to find a solution to ship air efficiently while also allowing us to use less plastic material in Duck® brand Bubble Wrap® brand cushioning.
In 2021, we diverted an estimated 1.8 million miles of travel off the roads – that’s enough to circle the Earth 74 times. Even better, the associated CO2 emission savings is equivalent to 246,575 gallons of gas, which saves 5.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions.
